A post graduate in child development from Lady Irwin College, Delhi. Sujata Sahay started her career as a college Lecturer. A change of residence to Kolkatta propelled her towards a career of interior designing. Her hobby of painting and creating decorative items from odd products found a perfect outlet in this particular field. Along with her interior work she started with terra-cotta pottery painting, Indian folk themes on them. She held her first hugely successful solo exhibition at Conclave Art gallery, Kolkatta in 1990.This was followed by several other solo exhibitions. In the period 1990 to 2004, she held and participated in more than twenty exhibitions throughout the country. She actively participated in interiors and artefacts exhibition. Her repertoire expanded to include terra-cotta and fibre-glass sculptures, lamps, murals, stained glass work and mirror paintings. Her fame as a decor artiste grew and she totally left the mainline interiors profession and concentrated only on making exclusive items of decor. Another change of residence in 2004 led her to change her line of work. She has made a series of canvas paintings in a semi-realistic style. She has created bold vibrant figures in a celebratory mood. The recent series of paintings has a music based theme. Music as an emotion expresses celebration, happiness, peace, even sadness, peace, even sadness and hence, as a theme, it represents for her a merging of art forms which are closest to her heart. You are invited to undertake a sensory journey of kaleidoscopic colours expressing celebration and joy. |
